Over 360 Tai Chi Enthusiasts in Emeishan City Showcase the Charm of Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage to Celebrate International Taijiquan Day
On the eve of the first International Taijiquan Day, more than 360 Tai Chi enthusiasts from Emeishan City gathered at the “Emei School” Martial Arts Square of the Emei Martial Arts Federation on March 20. They held a Tai Chi demonstration themed “Fit For Life, Go for Taiji”, answering the call for national fitness and jointly showcasing the elegance of humanity’s intangible cultural heritage.
It is learned that UNESCO designated March 21 as International Taijiquan Day every year on November 5, 2025. This is the first international day named after a martial art, marking that Tai Chi, a treasure of traditional Chinese culture, has officially become a shared cultural wealth of the world. Emeishan City, which has been repeatedly awarded the title of “National Advanced Martial Arts Town” and “Sichuan Provincial Advanced Martial Arts Unit”, boasts a solid mass foundation for Tai Chi. It has over 160 national-level (Level 1 to 3) Tai Chi referees and provincial-level (Level 1 to 2) social sports instructors in Sichuan Province. The city has long organized the public to participate in Tai Chi fitness training, demonstrations and popularization activities, and persistently holds the “Thousand-Person Tai Chi Demonstration” every year. Approximately 20,000 elderly people in the city practice Tai Chi regularly. On that day, more than 360 Tai Chi backbones from 23 stations under the jurisdiction of Emeishan City participated in the celebration.
Accompanied by soothing melodies, members of Tai Chi and sword teams from the Health & Wellness Club of Emei Jingwu Hall, Emeishan City Senior University, Emei Riverside and other organizations, dressed in uniform, demonstrated the Eight Methods and Five Steps Taijiquan, Twenty-four Style Taijiquan and other programs in high spirits and with superb skills. Their movements were coherent, combining hardness and softness, with graceful postures, fully displaying the charm of oriental aesthetics. They vividly presented the grace and vigor of Tai Chi, attracting numerous citizens and tourists to stop and watch.
It is reported that Tai Chi not only encourages the elderly to actively participate in physical exercise but also enriches cultural and sports activities at the grassroots level. This demonstration activity is not only a vivid inheritance of the intangible cultural heritage of Tai Chi but also a powerful practice of the concept of national fitness. It fully demonstrates the sense of responsibility and good spirit of Emei martial arts practitioners in promoting national quintessence, strengthening physical fitness and inheriting culture, making positive contributions to carrying forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture and promoting the national fitness campaign.
